So you just came up with verse one and a chorus and now you need to extend your story and write verse two. You notice I did say a story because that’s what a song is, a three minute story. When starting the second verse you have to ask yourself what happened next after reading your first verse over a few times. What comes next?, how is the story evolving. A good songwriting tip, very important that you have a nice sequential story with verse two evolving and following through after the opening story which you set up in verse one. Then your next verse should continue the same pattern of being a natural follow through from verse one, as far as the relating of the story line itself.

You only have a short window of time to capture your audience. Keep it evolving with fresh lines and progressing the STORY.This is a very important songwriting tip on how to write a song.Do not say the same thing in verse two as you did in verse one by using just different words. On how to write songs this is essential.

On a song I wrote called “Don’t Count Sleep” The song will you show on how to build a story on country music lyrics.

Snuck in my window after curfew
I thought I was so cool
Daddy woke me up at daylight
I said “Hey Man that’s cruel”
Then he threw me my hat and boots
Growled “Boy get out of that bed”
Worked me like a plow horse
My face was burning red
I said” Hey Pop lets quit, the sun’s about down”
He just smiled and said ” There’s one thing that I’ve found

Chorus

YOU ONLY LIVE ABOUT FORTY YEARS
IF YA DON’T COUNT SLEEP
AND I KNOW AS A YOUNG MAN
YOU DON’T THINK THAT DEEP
YEAH THIS BIG BLUE BALL THAT WE’RE LIVING ON
SPINS FASTER THAN YOU THINK
WE ONLY LIVE ABOUT FORTY YEARS
WELL THAT’S IF YOU DON’T COUNT SLEEP

v2
Eleven years of short days and nights
Slipped by much too fast
Working crazy no vacation
When Daddy calls he just laughs
Have a baby boy due in a month
I need to clone myself in two
Dig holes for my new fence
And paint that room blue
Like to throw water in that hour glass of sand
Can’t believe I’m crowding thirty, now I understand
REPEAT CHORUS
BRIDGE
Sixteen hours to make that hay
The other eight we dream away
So fit alotta life in between
Cuz as the pendulum swings

So in summary keep the song evolving, A three minute short movie. Then start of the story with a fresh opening line. Keep the story moving. I know I sound redundant at times. I’m trying to drive home the point on songwriting.

That’s James Taylor in the image, my major influence that got me to pick up the guitar. Well that and my father, but that’s a different story.

Please leave a comment I’d love to hear from you.
