When starting off in songwriting you’re going to write about yourself. This is natural. Once you progress you can look at other people’s lives with your country music lyrics.
These are tips on how to write a song.

Songwriting

Writing about yourself all the time can get pretty emotional. How many times do you want to get your heart broke?  So you can write some heart-wrenching ballad, but if you want great country songwriting lyrics I’m afraid you’ll have to live thru your song.  Sorry, that’s the way it is.  Why do you think country artists look for songwriters to provide them with material?  I think you get my drift. There’s an easier way, write down good ideas and work on a less emotional approach on writing, or you’ll be a human train wreck in your songwriting world.

A little girl stands on an old phone book
Just to see how good she looks in the mirror
With her Mama’s lipstick on
Flips the pages of a magazine
Dreams about Divas in limousines
That’s the life she wants
Can’t wait for time to pass
Her Mama says, You’re growing too fast
CHORUS
SLOW DOWN GIRL WHAT’S YOUR HURRY
LIFE IS JUST ONE LONG JOURNEY
WAITING FOR YOU
YOU SEE THE WORLD THROUGH INNOCENT EYES
BORN TO RUN WITH WINGS TO FLY
YOU BETTER SLOW DOWN GIRL
v2
That little girl’s turning seventeen
Packs for LA to chase big dreams
So determined to prove she’s right
Her Daddy says, What about college?
You’re too young, don’t have the knowledge
She says, Dad I’ve gotta try
No time to wait she’s in a rush
Waves goodbye from a Greyhound bus
REPEAT CHORUS
BRIDGE:
As the curtain rises slowly
Her band begins to play
The screaming crowd all know her name
Now she just smiles when they say
repeat chorus

In the country market, they like upbeat songs. Your perception that country is all “Kick the bucket – I lost her again” is all wrong. Even the “she done me wrong” country songs now in country are pretty slick and very honed material. A lot of writer’s these day are college educated. We’ve come along way since Hank Williams penned “Your Cheating Heart” … like it, or not. Though I cry every time when I hear Hank’s tunes.

Most focus on falling in love and a fresh story on how he or she did it. This points again on how many times can you fall in love, so eventually you are going to have to write about other peoples lives. Don’t worry whatever your going through will be woven in the song.

Fresh upbeat songs are hard to write. Again you need a new angle on how to look at love and life, but be believable. Also the music better be a little different too, it doesn’t have to be drastically different. But you want it to stand out above the pack. I’m talking on competing in the country pro level. But even if you’re just doing it for you and local fans, you want to be stretching borders on your how to write songs and your music.

In other genres there about the same rules, except country paints a more descriptive picture in their story’s. Reading positive thinking books and interesting novels can spark ideas. A good songwriting tip is to be  always be searching for fresh ideas. Sometimes just talking to someone he or she might say something interesting that sparks a idea or title. You can also write a funny one once in awhile, let’s face it,  love is drama losing it……. or finding it. A wise idea on how to write a song and to keep your sanity.

When I first started off I had three to four songs going a day, I’ve tapered off . The magic is elusive, it comes and goes, but the more you think about songwriting the more you’ll produce songs
Also If you love and live life abundantly…trust me you’ll write with heart and soul with your country songs or any genre your in.

“If you can’t live life like you were dying everyday, at least try to a few times a month”. }
But take a break once in awhile, pursue other interests, don’t burn yourself out.  Try to balance yourself.

Please leave a comment I’d love to hear from you.
